ATWJE - Karie Nordland - The Record Setter
Monday Apr 03, 2023
Monday Apr 03, 2023
Episode: 00153 Released on April 3, 2023Description: Karie Nordland sets the record for youngest person to network with a law enforcement professional on our show at ~12 years old (seventh grade), and another record for identifying a subject via social media that it became a fun past-time at her agency. In this episode, Karie discusses how she knew she wanted to be in the law enforcement field at an early age, and the classes and internships she partook in to achieve her goals – now she’s spewing crime analysis all over the place! Karie does a class on using social media as a (powerful) tool to assist in investigations; Karie breaks down the main lessons of her class, but we definitely recommend attending it whenever she presents it! Karie’s badge story involves a female-led and driven investigation that promoted solidarity and stood against misogyny using all available resources to bring the perpetrator to justice. Karie is currently a Crime Analyst II for the Lakewood (CO) Police Department.

ATWJE - Allison Davids - Getting Better Together
Monday Mar 27, 2023
Monday Mar 27, 2023
Episode: 00152 Released on March 27, 2023Description: In this compelling episode, Allison Davids shares a traumatic story, and honestly, you do this job long enough, and you’ll likely rack up quite a few of your own. Allison gives us an overview of the event, how she and her department handled it, and how she’s coping with it now. Allison’s badge story involves a gun investigation workingwith multiple federal agents, and giving a presentation to then-Attorney General, William Barr. Allison is currently a criminal intelligence analyst for the Hamilton County (OH) Sheriff’s Office.
As mentioned, you do this job long enough, and you’re bound to have a few traumatic “war stories,” to share. If you’re comfortable and willing, we’d love to hear yours. Your story, just like Allison’s, will let other analysts know that they aren’t alone, and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel after a traumatic event on the job. If interested, please send a voice clip of your story to leapodcasts@gmail.com. If you would rather stay anonymous, you can send us a transcript to read verbatim on your behalf. Thank you for your support and engagement on such an important and impactful topic within the law enforcement analytical community!

Monday Mar 13, 2023
Monday Mar 13, 2023
Episode: 00150 Released on March 13, 2023Description: This week we interview our farthest guest yet – all the way from Austria, Sam Steiner! In this episode, Friedrich "Sam" Steiner shares how his agency developed their first crime analysis unit, and how it has evolved over the decades. Sam brings us two analyst badge stories: a murder investigation involving a husband and wife, and another investigation involving GPS in vehicles and other smart technologies – have a smartwatch or refrigerator? It’s collecting data on you! If you’ve been to an IACA Conference in the past decade, you may have attended one of Sam’s presentations, or have seen his name on the Board Election ballots. Sam took a break from IACA last year to focus on building a European analyst association that currently has around 500 members! Sam is currently the Head of Crime Analysis unit in Styria, Austria and plans to continue being involved with the analyst community even in his retirement.

Episode: 00147 Released on February 20, 2023Description: The law enforcement (analysis) field is ever-changing with new technology advancement, best practices, and theories on criminal behavior, so it is pertinent that agencies prioritize training for their analysts, and for analysts to advocate for themselves when it comes to training. In this episode, Anthony D’Abruzzo (side note: how would you pronounce his last name?) share how he discovered the profession as well as what he does as a training coordinator for the State of New York. Anthony’s badge story involves his development of different methods to collect and disseminate gun statistics for his agency and his professional relationship development with other professionals in the field; most notably, Deb Piehl, a prior guest on our show. Anthony and Jason go into multiple topics, including pay disparity amongst analysts across the country such as a Florida position that got a lot of traction on LinkedIn about a month ago. Anthony is currently the Crime Analysis Program Training Coordinator for the New York State (NYS) Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Monday Feb 13, 2023
Episode: 00146 Released on February 13, 2023 Description: The law enforcement analysis profession is full of people helping other people. In this episode, Kristen (Kris) Jacoby explains how she first learned about the profession, and how our friend and former guest, Noah Fritz, helped her during her college days when he was a professor at the University of Denver. The DPD Crime Analysis Unit unsurprisingly looked different back then compared to today, and Kris discusses the various changes that have occurred since she started, how they navigated through the pandemic, and where she thinks they are going from here. Kris is currently a crime analyst for the Denver Police Department, a position she’s held for almost 17 years.
