Episode: 00051
Release Date: April 19, 2021
Description: Students and professionals of law enforcement should be familiar with the concept of problem-oriented policing (POP); it is one of the longest-used and effective policing approaches. In this episode, we speak with a subject matter expert (SME) and long-time practitioner of POP, Julie Wartell. Julie developed her expertise in POP to enhance public safety at the San Diego Police Department in the 1990s and was one of the early crime analysts working in a prosecutor’s office, opening the doors for many more. Julie has produced a multitude of policing and crime publications through her work with the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), POP Center and the IACA. Julie has a love for craft beers and has even used her analytical skills to develop a brewery mapping website! If you love POP or want to learn about how it can benefit your agency, this is an episode you don’t want to miss! Julie Wartell currently works with public safety agencies and communities on analysis, information technology and problem-solving efforts. In her spare time, she also teaches and does research at UC San Diego.
