Julie has a love for craft beers and has even used her analytical skills to develop a brewery mapping website! If you love POP or want to learn about how it can benefit your agency, this is an episode you don’t want to miss! Julie Wartell currently works with public safety agencies and communities on analysis, information technology and problem-solving efforts. Monday Mar 29, 2021
Episode: 00048
Release Date: March 29, 2021
Description: In the 1990s, the New York Police Department (NYPD) set up a program to quantify, analyze, and provide discussion points to address (crime) problems in their jurisdiction; this became known as CompStat. Over the years, many agencies around the world adopted their own variation of CompStat to analyze and evaluate the impact of their respective patrols and resource allocations. In this episode, Deb Piehl explains how CompStat was implemented and effectively utilized at NYPD, and how agencies often miss an important aspect of CompStat: the solution -- "CompStat is not about the numbers, but what is being done to address the issues out there." This episode is filled with information on different data resources and how to utilize them (e.g., DDACTS), data quality assurance techniques, and addressing data quality issues. Deb is a considered a subject matter expert (SME) in CompStat, DDACTS, criminal justice policies & procedures, and of course, crime analysis.
Trivia: Deb Piehl was the first recipient of the Bryan Hill award for her service and dedication to the advancement of the crime analysis field.

Description: What possibilities exist when we embrace opportunity, tune into our subconscious processing, while also allowing time for our mind to declutter? In this episode, Nadia Tuominen, a 15-year law enforcement analyst veteran, walks us through going from the public sector to the private sector to later starting her own business and embracing the psychology of intelligence analysis. Nadia began her career with the Metropolitan Police (UK) and discusses her experience with the hiring process and her initial assignments in burglary and then robbery. Monday Mar 01, 2021
Monday Mar 01, 2021
Episode: 00044
Release Date: March 1, 2021
Description: What are the stepping stones towards working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)? In this episode, Mary "Mare" Cunningham shares her career journey from being a graphic design intern for the Minneapolis Police Department to being an analyst for the department, to an operation support technician for the FBI, to being an analyst for the Maple Grove Police Department, and finally to an operation specialist back at the FBI. Mare shares two badge stories in this episode: one about how license plate readers (LPR) helped solve a homicide and how open source resources helped solve an armed robbery and assault case. Mare advocates for intelligence sharing and collaboration across multiple agencies, and how beneficial it was to work for a task force such as the FBI Safe Streets Task Force. In another jam-packed episode, Mare also elaborates on her experience as an administrative analyst and investigative analyst, training she recommends, as well as the importance of law enforcement presence in the community such as National Night Out events. Mare is currently a Staff Operations Specialist for the FBI, Violent Crime, Crimes Against Children and Human Trafficking.
