Bio
Leigh Morgan-Jones – Head of Service Delivery - Staffordshire Police. Leigh has been enjoying her career at Staffordshire Police since 2003 following her role as an Analyst for West Midlands Police and is part of the Knowledge Hub Command Team specifically responsible for research, intelligence, performance and analysis force-wide. Leigh leads several happy teams that deliver a consistent outstanding service for Local Policing, Investigative Services and Force strategic leaders as well as a Real Time Intelligence function within the Contact Services Department.
To complement her core role Leigh is the Chair of the NPCC Intelligence Portfolio sub-group- National Analyst Working Group that reports to the NPCC National Analysis Coordination Group. On occasion Leigh acts as a specialist advisor for national analysis projects and thrives at being at the forefront of a continually improving analysis community in UK Law Enforcement.

Description: In this week’s episode, Brian Novotny shares with us his passion for law enforcement by sharing stories from his diverse background. He began his career in fraud investigations, and then went on to work in gang investigations and as a paralegal before becoming a crime analysis supervisor. He talks about ethical questions and dilemmas that he has faced during his career, and how he was able to overcome them. Brian’s goals are to bridge the gap between sworn and non-sworn employees and between small agencies and large agencies. The question he is currently working on: How can larger agencies provide support to agencies with fewer resources? Brian Novotny is currently Crime Analysis and Research Unit Supervisor at the Maricopa County District Attorney’s office in Phoenix, AZ. He is also the director of the South West Chapter of IALEIA.

Bio
Derek Johnson joined Northumbria University in 2008 as a lecturer in Crime Science and has been the BSc Crime Science programme leader since attaining the position of senior lecturer in 2009. He has considerable experience of the teaching and learning quality assessment processes, developed a BA programme in Human Geography & Crime and a number of bespoke accredited training courses for industry.
Derek is the Principal Investigator for an EU-funded project in partnership with 6 European agencies and government bodies concerning transnational offending and the exchange of bioinformatics across EU state borders. In addition Derek is actively engaged in securing funding from the private sector for a student bursaries and research projects.Prior to joining academia Derek was a serving UK Police Officer for 30 years during which time he received 8 commendations for investigatory work. He spent the majority of his service in investigation roles working in departments ranging from general localised criminal investigation, Vice & Drug investigations, National and International investigations and major crime operations.

Eric reflects on his two badges stories: Foot Patrol Hotspots and Video Surveillance. While many research projects broke his heart, this does not discourage him from pursuing his interests. Jason and Eric also have a lengthy discussion on the lack of new key performance indicators in the Compstat process. Eric has a new book entitled Modern Policing Using ArcGIS Pro, and he is currently an associate professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
