About the guest:
Dani has been an intelligence analyst within policing for 16 years and a special constable for 12. She initially worked on divisional level 1 criminality before moving forces to work on a Major Incident Team. She then moved back to divisional work but within the world of child sexual exploitation undertaking both strategic and tactical work to improve the policing response to this type of criminality. She then moved over to work in a multi-agency CSE team working for the council and then moved to the Joint Slavery and Trafficking Analysis Centre where she represented territorial policing and was the lead for Child Trafficking.
Dani was one of the winners of the ACIA awards in 2014 and went on to win the IALEIA award in 2015. She regularly speaks at conferences and enjoys promoting the work of analysis in law enforcement.
Dani recently left law enforcement to take the post of Child Protection Lead Analyst within a safety tech company at the forefront of tackling online abuse of children.

Description: Criminal behavior and profiling have become widely popular due to mainstream television shows such as Criminal Minds and NCIS as well as a variety of documentaries on serial killers and exploration into their psyche. This week, we interviewed Dr. Leigh Ann Perry who has done work with the real FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) and NCIS Criminal Threat Division, to give us a real-work look on what it is like to work for these units, and compare how the shows stack to reality. Dr. Perry detailed the cases she worked with the respective units as well as gave listeners insights on how to seek out internships and potential job opportunities with these units. She also talks about her dissertation on the 7 attributes of the sexual assault event. If you're ever wondering what it is like to do analysis, especially in criminal behavior, this is the episode for you! Dr. Perry is currently an analyst team leader in global security as well as an adjunct professor with Salve Regina University.

According to this week's guest, Sean Rambaran, "we want to put away the crime drivers, the ones who are responsible to the majority of the crimes, the most serious offenses …" and in this episode, Sean gives us a little overview on a case he worked on where he is helping to do just that. Sean highlights how he help developed various databases to help with information sharing and emphasizes the necessity of sharing among law enforcement agencies. Sean is currently a criminal intelligence analyst with the Pima County Attorney's Office.

In this week's episode, seasoned analyst and former theater professional, Brittany Willis, shares how she transitioned from a theater career to a law enforcement career, and how she used that creativity and artistic mindset to assist in a homicide investigation. Brittany gives insight on how she started her career in crime analysis, and the benefits of being a dispatcher first before transitioning into an analytical role. Brittany is currently a senior crime analyst with the Scottsdale Police Department.

Description: Students and professionals of law enforcement should be familiar with the concept of problem-oriented policing (POP); it is one of the longest-used and effective policing approaches. In this episode, we speak with a subject matter expert (SME) and long-time practitioner of POP, Julie Wartell. Julie developed her expertise in POP to enhance public safety at the San Diego Police Department in the 1990s and was one of the early crime analysts working in a prosecutor’s office, opening the doors for many more. Julie has produced a multitude of policing and crime publications through her work with the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), POP Center and the IACA. Julie has a love for craft beers and has even used her analytical skills to develop a brewery mapping website! If you love POP or want to learn about how it can benefit your agency, this is an episode you don’t want to miss! Julie Wartell currently works with public safety agencies and communities on analysis, information technology and problem-solving efforts. In her spare time, she also teaches and does research at UC San Diego.

Debbie discusses the variety of ventures she undertook to help advance the profession as well as her action plan were she to be selected for a “law enforcement analysis director” position. In 2018, she retired as an investigative analyst from the United States Secret Service.
